How TikTok is influencing the Music Charts

Updated: Jun 25, 2020

If you've had a look at the 'Top 20' or even the 'Top 50' music charts in the world currently you'll notice a familiar trend. Quite a lot of these songs have been trending as video challenges on the popular app TikTok.

If you're anything like me, TikTok is a great app to spend countless hours scrolling past and viewing short funny videos. If you haven't experienced the craze of the app yet, you're probably trying to tell yourself you're too cool for an app like this-well it's your loss! There's a reason why this app is so popular.... each video ranges from 15- 60 seconds max so it's easy to keep your attention span and the challenges are too addicting not to try. Challenges can range from kicking a bottle top of a drink with your foot to all kind of dance challenges. There's no age limit with the app (although the younger kids rule this app), so everyone can enjoy it!

Now as to why it's affecting the music charts? With every challenge, funny video, or dance video that is posted tracks are chosen to be played alongside the video. Doja Cat is one artist that is really benefiting off the Tiktok app, thanks to plenty of her songs going viral on the app with catchy dances that people recreate.

For example currently the song Savage by Megan Thee Stallion can be seen in most videos you scroll past accompanied by the 'Savage Dance' created by user @keke.janajah (seen below).

This dance blew up, and millions of videos have been made recreating the dance to the song- hence allowing plenty of people to hear the song and then find it on their favourite streaming services. This is the case for plenty of songs currently on the charts at the moment like number 1 "Toosie Slide" by Drake (see below).

Or the fun "Blinding Lights" by the Weeknd (#2 on the charts) dance which has seen many different variations on the trend:

Here's "Blueberry Faygo" by Lil Mosey number 3 on the charts at the moment (spotify top 50) shown on Addison Rae's TikTok account which has over 1 million likes:

What about number 4 on the chart? "Roses-Imanbek Remix" by SAINt JHN and Imanbek brought this dance trend to the app:

I could quite literally go on and on down the list, I can assure you every song will have some trend or dance that is heightening it popularity amongst TikTok users.

Of course these are artists that are already recognised globally so their songs would most likely be on the charts regardless, but there are also plenty of songs and artists that have emerged from the app and have thanked TikTok for their success with their song blowing up on the charts.

Ok how could we not start with one of the biggest songs of 2019?! This song was quite literally everywhere and remixed a hundred times. He now has gone on to be quite successful and even won the CMA awards for Musical Event Of the Year 2019.

"I promoted the song as a meme for months until it caught on to TikTok and it became way bigger,"he told Time. "TikTok helped me change my life," Lil Nas X said, in a release brought out by the app. "TikTok brought my song to several different audiences at once."

If the name isn't ringing any bells, click the link to hear the song and video and you'll remember exactly which la la melody this one is. Watch out, this one will get stuck in your head for weeks!

Another cowboy themed song what do you know. But did you known Blanco Brown is the producer of Chris Brown and Pitbull? Well now he's quite well known on his own thanks to his track getting popular on TikTok.

Seeing the success of others on the app like Lil Nas X, the American rapper posted it to TikTok where he got major success for his song Fast.

You might recognise the song and that's because it's a remix of the song “Ride it” of Jay Sean, and because it's been playing on the radio non-stop. Since Tiktok the DJ has now signed with the Ministry of Sound!

This song made a billboard hot 100 entry after his song become viral on the app and is now signed to Columbia Records.

Now signed to Arista Records Ant Saunders made it big on Tiktok with his indie record 'Yellow Hearts'. Many users have put their own spin on the song creating many different versions and remixes.

After this song became a viral hit on the app, Ashnikko says “This song has been f–king insane. It’s opened a lot of doors for me. I’m nothing but grateful” in an interview for Billboard

With all these new artists and influencers emerging from the app, what are you still doing? Download the app and upload your skills and you might just find your own kind of fame from it, that or you'll just spend hours watching videos like me. Either way, it's a win win situation.
