AMA's 2019: Taylor Swift's record-breaking night

It was a record-breaking night for Taylor Swift after she won six American Music Awards, taking her all-time total to 29 breaking Michael Jackson's record at 24.

The AMA's was nothing short of drama, bright fashion, and bold statements.

Let's take a look at everything that happened at this years 2019 AMA's:

Selena Gomez made her first performance after 2 years

Gomez performed her emotional song 'Lose you to Love me', before changing looks and going into her more upbeat song, 'Look at her now'.

The performance has brought some strong opinions though with people online stating Gomez’s performance was branded “terrible” and “cringe-worthy”.

But, it has to be noted that it was her first performance after 2 years and to sing quite an emotional song would be nerve-wracking enough.

Taylor Swift performs and breaks AMA history

Is it really an award show without Taylor Swift winning every award and delivering a medley of hits?

This year was no exception, with Swift taking home six awards taking her all-time total to 29, surpassing Michael Jackson’s record of 24.

Her performance nearly didn't happen though as Swift is currently involved in a very public and messy feud with talent manager Scooter Braun and her former record label over the rights to her back catalogue of six album.

Swift wrote to her fans addressing the issue: “Guys – It’s been announced recently that the American Music Awards will be honouring me with the Artist of the Decade Award at this year’s ceremony. I’ve been planning to perform a medley of my hits throughout the decade on the show."

“Scott Borchetta and Scooter Braun have now said that I’m not allowed to perform my old songs on television because they claim that would be re-recording my music before I’m allowed to next year."

“The message being sent to me is very clear. Basically, be a good little girl and shut up. Or you’ll be punished. This is WRONG. Neither of these men had a hand in the writing of those songs. They did nothing to create the relationship I have with my fans. So this is where I’m asking for your help."

Her fight to sing her past hits during the show got the green light as she sang, "If I was a man I'd be THE man."

And that's the TEA on that.

Ciara debuts new song 'Melanin'

Ciara is back with a brand new song and even had some of her friends Lupita Nyong'o, Esther Dean, City Girls, and La La feature on the track. Ciara told PEOPLE of her song. The beautiful track is about “embracing who you truly are, and that melanin.”

We get another saucy performance from Shawmila (incase you're wondering, that's Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello)

Mendes and Cabello gave us yet another hot performance, that ended in them teasing the audience with a near kiss (just like their VMA performance earlier in the year). As per usual their vocals and stage presence did not disappoint!

Lizzo brings the light!

With the crowd looking like a sea of city lights, Lizzo showed us exactly why she's here to stay. Singing her new single 'Jerome', she stood on a circular platform that rotated as she sang her heart out for the crowd. With a performance like that it's no surprise, she received a standing ovation from the crowd.

A firey performance from Post Malone, Ozzy Osbourne, Travis Scott, and Watt.

An unlikely group to perform together, but that's exactly why I love award shows- a blending of genres and performances.

The tree singers set the stage on fire (literally) whilst Watt kept the energy going with a killer guitar solo.

Kesha gets the party started with a throwback hit

Kesha is back everyone! After performing her song “Raising Hell” alongside artist Big Freedia, Kesha surprised the crowd with her single 'Tik Tok', which the crowd responded to in cheers. The ultimate party starter queen.

Toni Braxton Delivers Nostalgic Performance of 'Un-Break My Heart'

It really was the show of return artists and nostalgia as Toni Braxton returned back to the stage after 25 years with her hit 'Un-break my heart'. A classic will always remain a classic.

Shania Twain covers Drake, Taylor Swift, plus a medley of her hits

How can I not include Shania Twain in this list? Like I said before, it really was the award night of throwbacks, and we got the classics from Twain as well as her covering Drake and Swift. ICONIC!

So so many performances

There were plenty of performances from the night, so many that this article would continue forever if I included them all.
