The Met Gala has to be one of my most favourite events in fashion as it allows the designer and the people wearing it to really show the creativity and skill in the design of the piece. Before I begin, let me start by saying Lady Gaga had one of the best entrances of all time *spoken in Kanye tone*.
A 16 minute entrance, I mean...how could you compete with that? To watch the amazing entrance skim through the video to find all amazing outfit reveals.
Note: the stair moment!
Every year on the first Monday of May the Metropolitan Museum of Art hosts a Costume Institute Gala to start off their fashion exhibit at the museum, and every year the guests chosen by Anna Wintour and the board pay homage to a dress theme code of that years theme in the exhibition.
This year the theme was Camp: Notes on Fashion, and like most years some people nailed, others looked great but did'n't follow theme...and then there were others that just didn't hit the mark at all.
The event was co-hosted by Lady Gaga, Serena Williams, Harry Styles, along with Gucci designer Alessandro Michele and, as always, Vogue editor Anna Wintour.
First before we dive into the details of all the looks, let me just give you a quick definition of what this years theme 'Camp' actually means. Despite the name it does not relate the outdoors camping activity but a reference to Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay, Notes on “Camp,” . In Sontag's essay she noted that lots of things can play relevance to being 'campy', such as songs, movies, buildings, furniture, novels, people and, of course, clothes. This explains why we had Katy Perry arrive as a chandelier, people playing 80's and 90's characters, and really just why all the looks were all so out there this year.
To sum it up simply, the theme is to be over the top and extravagant.
Ok so now for some of this years looks:
EMILY RATAJKOWSKI (Dundas dress):
Firstly, wow body! Secondly, Emily looks like an ethereal dream sent straight from the Grecian gods. I'm glad the headpiece was included otherwise it would've been just another naked dress that she likes to repeat on carpets. Gorgeous!
LILY COLLINS (Giambattista Valli & Cartier):
Ok, so if you don't know by now I have a massive girl crush on Lily Collins and I am obsessed with her hair and makeup here. The look is an ode to Priscilla Presleys look for her wedding to Elvis Presley. So already because of that it's a massive tick in my book.
EMILY BLUNT (Michael Kors):
Looking like a real life gold statue Blunt looks like a piece of gorgeous gold. I'm always surprised by Blunt's choices to step away from safe choices and I'm guessing her object for this theme was quite literally gold.
CARA DELEVINGE (Dior):
I think Cara is going for a Candy Man (girl) theme for this one. Cara is definitely not one to shy away from a bold look, but I'm used to seeing her in darker looks so it's nice to see her finally wearing so much colour. Love the hair also.
DARREN CRISS (Balmain):
I purposely used this close up photo of Criss because of the amazing detailing on the jacket and that blue eyeshadow/liner moment. I love when a guy isn't afraid to wear bold makeup, I think this is one of my favourite looks for the men, from the detailing on the side of the pants to the nail colour.
JARED LETO (Gucci):
Ok, I change my mind, this is my favourite men's look for the night. Not just because he always has the nicest hair that looks like he came straight from a hair commercial, but because he always knocks the theme right out of the park. This year his accessory? His own head.
ALESSANDRO MICHELE & HARRY STYLES (Gucci):
Of course we were going to see Harry in Gucci as he is the newest face of the brand. Here he is with Alessandro the creative director at Gucci. To be honest since Harry is one of the co-hosts this year and is known for his colourful gender neutral fashion, especially when he tours, I was expecting something a little more from him. Alessandro on the other hand is exactly what I expected from tonight's carpet, extravagant and over the top! Ok so as much as I'm obsessed with Harry and his fashion game lately, I was really hoping he was going to do something super crazy. Although the pants are definitely a talking point on their own! Note: I do really like the top though.
BILLY PORTER (The Blonds):
Ok, so I'm going to say it again. The men really came for this years Met Gala! They definitely didn't hold back from showing their most extravagant self, especially Billy Porter as he was carried in by six shirtless men as a nod to Ancient Egypt. The drama on this look is absolutely everything, I loved the complete gold look.
KENDALL & KYLIE JENNER (Versace):
One of my favourite moments from the Galas are the matching couples and partners, in this case Kendall and Kylie. Going for a sexy-seductive showgirl vibe this look was show...stopping (too much?), from the vibrant clash of colours to the incredible wig and feather pieces. There's a reason this look is saturating your insta feed right now. So glad they did a look together again!
RUPAUL (Zaldy):
Ok, Ok, I know what you're thinking. RuPaul this is literally your area of expertise why just a suit? In fact three weeks ago the look was actually supposed to be a gown but Ru wanted to walk without drag and the designer wanted to create more of a suit look but still capture RuPaul's energy in it. I think for a suit this suit is the suit of all suits (how many times do you think I can say suit?), and this look is still a winner in my eyes.
HAILEE STEINFELD (Viktor and Rolf):
I love love love Hailee's style as it's always so different, this Viktor and Rolf look is no exception, I know for some people it's a bit much but that's exactly the idea of the theme and this look nailed it. From the giant fluffy hair, to the nails, all the way to the incredible gown with the phrase 'No Photos Please'. I bow down to you Hailee.
CARDI B (Thom Browne):
Cardi definitely knows how to make an entrance that's for sure. I love the long train and the ripple effect that it has, although I'm not a complete fan of the headpiece, maybe it's because I love a good weave and hairstyle but overall this look is EXTRA! Hand embroidered bead detailing, ruby nipples, 30,000 burned and dyed coque feathers, over 35 hours of work, and over 2,000 hours to create. I'm exhausted just from typing that!
LADY GAGA (Brandon Maxwell with Tiffany & Co Jewels)
Of course how could I not include Lady Gaga in this list, her entrance lasted for 16 minutes and included men walking around her with umbrellas, 4 different outfit changes (not counting the other outfit after the carpet), and her amazing faces she pulled for this character. It was like watching a performance straight from her concert, theatrical and full of gaga drama. I'm putting this as my favourite entrance and look from the night.
KATY PERRY (Moschino):
Trust Katy to pull another whacky look for the Gala, but you know what? She always goes for it, she isn't afraid to try costume type outfits, and she always puts a quirky spin on the theme. Clearly she went this year as an extravagant chandelier, and you have to give her credit for going for something so bold.
ZENDAYA (Tommy Hilfiger):
This look brings Cinderella to real life with the magic fairy and all! I know we saw a similar look back a few years with Claire Daines I believe it was with her led dress but the way the dress was presented and acted out really brought out the Cinderella character with this one. I love how she is even carrying a small pumpkin bag and the effects from the fairy godmother with her wand. Pure magic, I'm actually obsessed with this one.
DUA LIPA (Versace):
I'm so shocked by this and I love it! Dua Lipa does love her colours but I expected she was going to wear something simple and well boring but this is anything but! The vibrant colours against the dark purple, that hair, the 60/70's makeup, and the fact that she looks like a Russian princess puts this as one of my other favourites for the night.
There are just way to many looks for me to write about and so many I have missed that I loved, so many I missed to include that I didn't like but I thought I would at least add them below in the gallery so you can see if your favourite is in there and be your own critic of tonights looks.
So, what did you think of this years theme and looks?
Did you think the designers and celebs understood the theme and who was your ultimate favourite from the night?
Personally I'm extremely impressed by how into theme everyone went and how they were't afraid to step out of their comfort zone, well for most anyway (looking at you Shawn Mendes). Next year, I may just have to figure out a way to get myself into that media pit so I can obsess over the looks in real life.
